Family and Career
A native Arkansan, Lioneld Jordan was born October 13, 1953 in Fayetteville, the fifth generation of a pioneer family who came to Arkansas in 1866.
Lioneld attended Huntsville Public Schools (Madison County), graduating from Huntsville High School in 1972. He married Diana Tice on March 27, 1976. The Jordans have made their home on Arrowhead Street in Fayetteville for over 30 years, where together they raised four children: Amanda, married to Luke Spoon; Jonathan, married to Sherry Fahrmann Jordan; Megan Jordan; and Katiann, married to Justin Grove. Diana and Lioneld have two grandchildren, Kayleigh and Easton.
Lioneld Jordan has worked for more than 26 years in facilities management for the University of Arkansas. A strong work ethic, combined with dedication to the University, to his coworkers, and to his peers, has helped Lioneld build a successful career. This in turn has allowed him to provide his children with greater opportunities for learning and success in their own lives, something Lioneld takes great pride in.
Armed with the belief that it's never too soon or too late for learning, Lioneld has worked hard to create his own opportunities for educational advancement. He strives to increase his knowledge, expand his viewpoint, and hone his practical and managerial skills by attending classes, workshops, and reading.
In his position with the University, Lioneld has had many opportunities to utilize his leadership skills. He served as president of the AFSCME Local Union 0965 and led a successful effort to save and protect the jobs of facility workers.
Lioneld's skill and expertise have helped the flagship campus of the University of Arkansas system operate its facilities without compromise. He leads a skilled team of five in maintaining systems and responding to customers (students, faculty and administration) at any time of the day or night. He knows how to work within a budget. Taking care of details, keeping promises, and honoring commitments are essential elements of Lioneld's work philosophy.
Role in City Government
Lioneld Jordan has served the citizens of Fayetteville for the past seven years as Ward 4 alderman. For the past four years, his peers on the City Council have elected him vice mayor, a position that requires the ability to step in and provide leadership in the absence of the mayor at city council sessions, tours, and special meetings. His record as a vice mayor and alderman is impeccable.
- He has never missed a vote on City Council. He has attended every meeting held during his term.
- He has held nearly 100 ward meetings during the past seven years. These meetings have provided an opportunity for his constituents to express their opinions on various city issues.
As vice mayor and alderman, Lioneld Jordan's has played a role in these accomplishments:
- Led the effort in pushing the City Council to build the first West Fayetteville Fire Station and the first expansion of services in the City of Fayetteville after nearly 25 years of tremendous growth, thereby keeping his promise to maintain and build infrastructure, and to reduce response times to emergency situations in Ward 4 to within six minutes
- Led a transportation program as chair of the Street Committee to help meet the top citizens requests as gathered in a citizens survey:
- Provide new access, safe road design and expanded roads service to growth areas of the City
- Provide calming traffic flow for the protection of children in their neighborhoods
- Provide choice in alternative transportation programs such as trails, sidewalks and bike lanes.
In addition, Lioneld has:
- Provided budget leadership in opposition of the 2008 property tax increase without seeking first to tighten the government's own pocketbook. Lioneld was willing to make hard decisions regarding city budget cuts before asking citizen taxpayers to dig deeper into their pockets.
- Provided a voice for lower income and elderly citizens in discussions of utility rate increases and in decisions that impact the finances of everyday people. Lioneld understands the working class and knows how important every dollar is to the average citizen.
- Provided willing council leadership on tough city issues such as impact fees and key environmental issues such as water quality, urban forest protection, and clean air.
- Established a record of "Putting Fayetteville First." When other communities and community leaders want Fayetteville to partner or provide services to areas of Northwest Arkansas outside of Fayetteville's city limits at the expense of our own community, Lioneld has fought to keep the Fayetteville citizens' interest in the forefront and to find win/win regional solutions when they make sense for the citizens he represents.
